Here’s a sneak peak of Versify, a new podcast from Nashville Public Radio coming in 2017 Continue Reading …
Launching in the summer of 2017: Versify is part storytelling and part poetry.
It begins by sending our team of poets out into neighborhoods and to community events, where we invite people to share a story from their life. The person they are sharing it to — the person listening — is one of our poets. This is where the magic comes in. The poet listens intently and then turns that life story into a poem, on the spot.
This is powerful because of what it's like to be truly heard — to know that someone is listening intently. And we find that our poets are great observers of life, and really good at drawing out key details from people, and finding the essence of their stories.
We've heard serious stories from a blind man who coaches wrestling, from a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, and the recovery of one man from a brain aneurysm. And we hear funny and unusual stories — about the adventures of an after-hours nightclub DJ; about a dogsitter who was watching a dog that kept on throwing up; and the tale of a man who was trying to remodel his home and ended up busting through the floor, his legs left dangling for his daughter to glimpse from her playroom below.
